The Hot Seat

Every session, three brave souls step into the hot seat. You bring a track. I critique, and show you exactly what I think is working and what's not.

Every session, three producers step into the hot seat.
You bring a track.
I show you exactly what's working, what's almost there,
and how to level it up.

How it Works:

Members-Only Zoom Call

Everyone's invited to watch and learn.
3 participant spots per session.
Works-in-Progress welcome!

Live Feedback Session

Each participant will play their track, and get about 20 minutes of focused critique from Dr. J.
The audience is welcome to participate in the feedback, too.

Discuss with others

You leave with a clear action plan. What to change, how, where to go from here, how to finish the track.

Frequently asked questions

Am I ready for a feedback session?

If you've made a track—any track, finished or not—you're ready. This isn't about being "good enough." It's about getting better. Also, remember that this isn't competitive. This supportive.

What should I bring?

One track. Any stage of completion. Rough idea, half-finished production, or something you think is done but you're not sure. Just have it ready send beforehand.

Do I need to be a paid student to participate? How can I choose my courses?

Yes. Hot Seat sessions are for current students of Doctor J Teaches Music.

What if I'm nervous about presenting?

Good. That means you care. Everyone's nervous their first time. The environment is supportive—we're all here to learn and make better music.

Can I just watch instead of being in the hot seat?

Absolutely. Watching other people get feedback is one of the best ways to learn. You'll catch things you can apply to your own work.

What if my track isn't finished?

Even better. We can help you figure out where it needs to go instead of trying to fix something you've already committed to.

What genres do you cover?

All of them. electronic, hip-hop, pop, classical, film/game scores, indie, experimental—if you made it, we can talk about it.

Will the session be recorded?

Yes, and shared with students afterward. If you're not comfortable with that, let me know and we can turn the recording off.

Can I sign up for multiple sessions?

Yes, but give other people a chance first. Once you've been in the hot seat, wait at least one session before signing up again.

What happens after my 20 minutes?

You'll have clear next steps. Most students report finally knowing exactly what their track needs—and actually being able to finish it.
