Why This Site Exists
After decades teaching music at universities, I watched too many talented students give up their dreams because of crushing debt. I saw institutions treating students like products instead of people. The system was broken, and I couldn't be part of it anymore.
So I walked away from my tenured professorship to build something better. I wanted to prove that world-class music education doesn't require student loans or ivory towers - just great teaching and genuine care for students.
I originally called this "Punkademic" - a home for academic rebels who believe education should lift people up, not weigh them down. These days it's simply "Doctor J Teaches Music," but the mission remains the same: give everyone access to the music education they deserve, at a price that won't derail their lives.
This isn't just online courses. It's a movement to democratize music learning. Welcome to the revolution.

"I've seen your classes on other sites. Why?"
You're right - my courses are all over the internet. When you search "music theory" or "Ableton Live" on most education platforms, you'll probably find me. Those sites are great for reaching students, but they come with major limitations.
Two big problems: First, they restrict how I can interact with students. No direct messages, limited Q&A, no real community building. Second, they keep 85% of what you pay. That's right - when you buy a $10 course, I see about $1.50.
This site changes everything. Here, I can answer your questions directly, host live sessions, and build the supportive community that makes learning actually work. Plus, your membership goes directly to funding better courses and resources, not to Silicon Valley shareholders.
Think of those other sites as guest appearances. This is home.
