You said 'someday I'll learn to make music.'

Someday is here.

Learn music theory, songwriting, and production from a human - not an AI.

Sick of starting songs but not
being able to finish them?

Finish a track in a weekend, not a year

You don't need another six-month course. You need to finish something. Every membership comes with downloadable track sessions, templates, and step-by-step builds you can actually complete on a Saturday — so you stop starting projects and start releasing them.

Pick up where you left off - at your own pace

Maybe you played in a band in college, or took piano as a kid, or always meant to learn that guitar sitting in the closet. Whatever shape your music journey took, it's still in there. Start at total fundamentals or jump back in where you left off — and learn at the pace your actual life allows.

Get your work in front of working musicians, daily

Dr. J answers your questions personally within 24 hours — not "we'll get back to you eventually." Drop a work-in-progress into a Hot Seat session for live feedback, get critique from a community of producers who take this as seriously as you do, and book 1-on-1 time when you need someone in the trenches with you.

You've started before. This time you'll finish.

You've watched the YouTube tutorials. Maybe bought a course or two. Maybe even have a half-finished track sitting on a hard drive somewhere. The problem isn't you — it's that learning music alone, from scratch, with no one to ask and no one to play it for, is brutal.
Here's what's different here:

  • You're not alone in a course library. Dr. J answers questions personally, every weekday.
  • You're not learning in a vacuum. Hot Seat sessions, monthly challenges, and a community of working producers mean your music actually gets heard.
  • You're not stuck in theory. Every course ends in something you made — not a certificate, a track.

It's the difference between buying a gym membership and hiring a coach who knows your name.

Which one sounds like you?

You used to play.
The returning learner
Maybe it was piano lessons as a kid, or a band in college, or a guitar that's been in the closet for 20 years. The music is still in there - you just need a path back in that respects where you actually are. Start at fundamentals, skip what you already know, and learn at your pace, with someone who treats returning students like the gift they are.
You have 45 minutes on a good day.
The super busy hobbyist
Between work, kids, life - you don't need a six-month course. You need to make something this weekend. Every membership comes with downloadable track sessions, project templates, and bite-sized lessons designed to fit into actual adult life. Finish something. Then finish something else.
You are already producing music.
Working producers
You've got tracks. You've maybe even released some. What you don't have is someone with serious credentials listening critically and telling you the truth. Hot Seat sessions, 1-on-1 lessons with Dr. J, and a community of producers who take this seriously give you the feedback loop solo producers never get.

Featured Testimonials

"I hadn't touched a piano since 1987. I figured that ship had sailed. My daughter gave me the membership for my 62nd birthday as kind of a joke, and now I'm writing again — actually writing. Not just plinking. Dr. J never once made me feel old or behind, which I'd been bracing for. Six months in, I recorded a song for my granddaughter's first birthday. I cried. My wife cried. The dog probably cried."
Margaret K.,
retired teacher, member since 2024
"I'm a parent of two with a full-time job. I'd been 'going to learn music production' for about four years, which mostly meant collecting Ableton tutorials I'd never watch. The Monthly Challenges are what unstuck me — having an actual deadline turned 'someday' into 'this Sunday.' I've finished eleven tracks this year. Last year I finished zero."
Devon R.,
software engineer & dad, member since 2023
"I've been releasing tracks on Spotify for about three years and I'd hit a wall — my mixes sounded amateur and I couldn't hear why. Two months of Hot Seat sessions and I finally understood what was off. Dr. J doesn't sugarcoat, which is exactly what I needed. My last EP got picked up by a small label. I genuinely don't think that happens without this membership."
Aiden T.,
producer, member since 2024

Hi! I'm J.

Yeah, it's just one letter. It's weird.
And I can't play basketball to save my life.

But I'm really good at teaching people music (there are awards to prove it). Here's my promise: you might be joining thousands of other students here, but your questions get my attention, your progress matters to me, and I'll walk with you through this entire journey. Think of this as just you and me – your personal music mentorship that just happens to be really fun and affordable.

Frequently asked questions

Is this for total beginners, or do I need experience?

Both. About a third of members start with zero experience — never opened a DAW, can't read music, don't know what a chord is. Another third are returning learners picking music back up after years away. The rest are already producing and want to level up. Every course is labeled by level, and Dr. J's teaching style assumes nothing. If you can use a web browser, you can start here.

How is this different from Udemy or YouTube?

YouTube is great for one-off questions. Udemy is great for individual courses. Neither gives you a teacher who knows your name, a community to share work with, live feedback on your tracks, or a structured path from "I don't know anything" to "I just released a song." This is a music department, not a course library. The difference shows up around month two — when most people quit YouTube tutorials and members here are finishing their first track.

Do I need to own a DAW or any gear?

No. Several courses use free tools (Ableton has a free trial, GarageBand is free on Mac, Reaper is essentially free). If you don't have anything yet, start with the "Getting Started" courses — they'll help you pick what's right for your goals and budget before you spend a dollar.

What does the free trial actually include?

Full access to everything for 15 days. All 140+ courses, the community, office hours - the whole library, Track sessions, sample libraries, and software downloads are disabled until your full membership gets unlocked. Cancel anytime during the trial and you won't be charged.

How much time do I need to put in?

As much or as little as you want. Some members do an hour a week. Some do an hour a day. The Monthly Challenges are designed for short windows — you can finish one in a weekend. The courses are self-paced, so you can binge a whole topic on a flight or chip away across months. There's no homework deadline pressuring you.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Monthly memberships cancel with one click — no email chains, no "are you sure" guilt trips, no waiting for the end of a term. Annual and Lifetime are non-refundable after the trial, so start monthly if you're not sure.

What if I'm not happy with the membership?

Cancel within the 15-day trial and you pay nothing. After that, monthly members can cancel anytime. If something specific isn't working for you, email Dr. J directly — drj@doctorjteachesmusic.com. Real person, real reply, usually within 24 hours.

Will I get personal feedback on my music?

Yes — this is one of the things that makes the membership different from a course site. Drop a question in any course and Dr. J responds within 24 hours on weekdays. Submit a work-in-progress to a Hot Seat session for live feedback. Book a 1-on-1 lesson when you need focused attention. The membership is built around the assumption that you'll have questions, and that you should be able to ask them.

Is this just a big weird AI-thing?

Nope! There is no Dr. J-AI lurking around here. Real human interaction only. To be honest, this site is a one-person shop with Dr. J being the man behind the curtain on everything.

Is there an app, or is it web-only?

Web-based, works on any device with a browser — laptop, tablet, phone. You can stream lessons on the couch, take notes on a tablet, follow along in a DAW on your laptop. Track sessions and project files download to your computer for use in your DAW.

What's the difference between Monthly, Annual, and Lifetime?

What's the difference between Monthly, Annual, and Lifetime?
Same membership, different ways to pay. Monthly ($14.99/mo) is the easy on-ramp — try it, cancel if it's not for you. Annual ($99.99/yr) saves you about 44% if you know you're in for the year. Lifetime ($449) pays for itself in about 2.5 years and means you never think about it again. Same full access either way.

I bought your courses on Udemy/Skillshare already. Do I need this?

Maybe not — and you should know that going in. The membership includes everything from those platforms plus the live community, office hours, Hot Seats, monthly challenges, downloadable track sessions, sample libraries, and direct access to Dr. J. If the courses alone were enough for you, stay where you are. If you want a teacher and a community, the membership is the upgrade.
